L136 pleco

Sold Out. The L Angelicus Pleco Hypancistrus sp. Its overall black or gray body is covered in tiny white or gold spots, making it a very striking fish for the planted or nano aquarium. Like many Hypancistrus species, it has not yet been scientifically described, though it has been known in the aquarium hobby for years. A generally peaceful and hardy species, the L Angelicus Pleco is an excellent, undemanding candidate for most aquariums. This smaller size makes for a much more manageable and less messy pleco that can thrive permanently in a well-maintained aquarium as small as 30 gallons.

Male plecos may be somewhat territorial with other males of their species, but disputes can usually be diffused by providing ample territory and hiding places for each fish. Please note that this fish requires a significantly warmer temperature than some other fish and invertebrates, especially subtropical species. Some shrimp will not thrive in these high temperatures. The L Angelicus Pleco is primarily nocturnal, but will often become active during daytime hours once established in an aquarium with plenty of driftwood, rockwork, and other hiding places.

It is not known to eat wood heavily like some plecos Panaque sp.

The L Angelicus Pleco will not bother most plants and it is not an effective algae eater. Feed the L Angelicus Pleco a diet heavy in both meaty and vegetable matter, including high-quality vegetable flakes, sinking algae wafers and pellets. Like most Hypancistrus species, the L Angelicus Pleco is omnivorous, but but it leans heavily on the carnivorous side.

It will also appreciate being fed some fresh vegetables such as shelled peas, spinach, zucchini and cucumber. This species also requires a very clean, well-maintained aquarium with moderate to high water flow in order to thrive.

The L Angelicus Pleco is a reclusive species, but it will typically be increasingly outgoing in a heavily planted and decorated aquarium with peaceful tankmates. Aquatic Ferns Bucephalandra sp. However, the danger of crossbreeding looms over it's existance in our hobby, so pure breeding is extremely significant to maintain the strains in captivity as it's natural habitat faces an uncertain future with the damming of the Xingu river. Rio Xingu is home to many similar looking Hypancistrus forms.

They are all closely related, and may even be variations morphs of the same species. Still, keeping the forms separated in captivity should be the rule, to avoid a blurry captive strain in the future.

L66 is possible to recognize with it's large adult size, forked tail and a body that is lower than it's close relative L In young fish, the pattern of L66 can be very striking, with just a few, broad, black lines aginst a very light body. Such specimens were initially thought to be a different form such as Lbut we have since learned that this pattern is a mutation that sometimes occur in most of the wormlined forms of Hypancistrus in Rio Xingu.

Adult specimens, males in particular, can become very grey and dull coloured with their body almost covered in odontodes. They need an aquarium set up consisting of lots of hiding places in the form of rocks, wood and of course specially made caves that suit their measurements. In these the males will eventually guard their offspring.

They prefer water that is fairly warm Csoft and slightly acidic. Most of all it should be well oxygenated and clean, so a good filtration system and frequent water changes are essential. Among themselves they are fairly peaceful, although males may quarrel for caves and females can sometimes be badly injured or even killed during the breeding-trapping in the male's cave. Males develop longer odontodes on their pectoral fins and on their cheeks, and have broader heads.

Hypancistrus are mostly carnivorous, so a selection of crustaceans, insect larvae and fish meat should be offered along with high quality dried foods that also contain some vegetable matter.

Other Parameters. Can take cooler water for periods of time. Water current doesn't need to be too strong. Generally peaceful but territorial from a young age.

Some large specimens are aggressively territorial and may cause problems if housed with other large nocturnal fish. Suggested Tankmates. The temptation with large tough Loricariids is to keep them with other large tough fish such as Oscars or other brutish characters. This actually works quite well with most omnivorous or mainly vegetarian plecos. Pseudacanthicus despite their defensive protection can be bullied by faster moving fish of similar size.

They are carnivores and only eat vegetables when their preferred food is unavailable. The amount of waste produced depends on their diet but is considerably less than a Panaque or Pterygoplichthys of similar size. Breeding Reports. There are 4 breeding reports, read them all here. This species is variable in it's pattern, which has led to it being one of a few l-numbers given additional letters behind the number to seoarate the forms. La has the smallest, most numerous spots, Lb is the in between form and Lc has few, big spots that may not even be circular. L is asomewhat forgotten number, but the original fish shows a specimen with fairly small spots that are not as numerous as the normal version of the species La. Captive breeding has shown that two La parents can produce offspring that displays the pattern of the other varieties.

They need an aquarium set up consisting of lots of hiding places in the form of rocks, wood and of course specially made caves that suit their measurements. In these the males will eventually guard their offspring. They prefer water that is fairly warm Csoft and slightly acidic.

Hypancistrus are mostly carnivorous, so a selection of crustaceans, insect larvae and fish meat should be offered along with high quality dried foods that also contain some vegetable matter. Due to the conditions in it's natural habitat, breeding of L is most successful in water with a very low hardness.
